Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and Russian President, Vladimir Putin shared warm greetings like old friends at the G20 summit held in Argentina. Vladimir Putin and Mohammed bin Salman shook hands enthusiastically and smiled at each other deeply.
This comes as other world leaders have tried to stay away from the Saudi Crown Prince after the murder of the journalist called Jamal Khashoggi. Jamal Khashoggi mysteriously disappeared after he was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey. Khashoggi had entered the consulate to obtain documents for a planned marriage.
The Saudi kingdom could not proffer conclusive explanations for his disappearance before they admitted that Khashoggi was murdered and his body was dismembered. It was revealed that Khashoggi’s body was dismembered and dissolved in acid. They dismembered his body to make it easier to dissolve it.
Saudi Arabia had initially denied involvement in the death of Khashoggi before claiming that rogue operatives carried out the operation without the knowledge of the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
Intelligence officials from America believe that the death order came directly from the Saudi Crown Prince. But the President of the United States, Donald Trump has said that he does not believe their assessment.
Trump was widely criticized for his reaction to the death of Jamal Khashoggi who was a journalist for the Washington Post. Trump cited an arms deal with Saudi Arabia as one of the reasons to maintain a good relationship with them regardless of the Khashoggi incident. CIA Director Gina Haspel was supposed to attend a closed-door briefing with US Senators on the killing but the White House prevented her from attending the briefing. This drew more criticism from the Trump administration.
Mohammed bin Salman will be meeting with Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron and a few other leaders at the G20 meeting in Argentina. Mr. Trump passed by Putin and Mohammed bin Salman without interacting with any of them. He told reporters that he shared nothing more than greetings with the Crown Prince, but said that a meeting might happen.
President Donald Trump canceled his meeting with Vladimir Putin on Thursday as he cited the clashes with Ukrainian and Russian military vehicles as the reason for him canceling the meetings.
The Russian coast guard attacked three Ukrainian ships and their crews during the weekend. Trump announced the cancellation of his meeting with Vladimir Putin after his former personal attorney Cohen pleaded guilty for lying to Congress. Michael Cohen had lied about his contact with Russian officials in a real estate deal for a Trump tower in Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
Cohen had also lied about the timing of his discussions with the Russian officials about the real estate deal. He had previously told the House intelligence committee that the talks ended in January 2016 which was before the presidential primaries. But court documents show that talks continued till as late as June 2016 just before Donald Trump became the GOP nominee. He had also discussed the deal with Donald Trump several times and briefed Donald Trump’s family members.
